Round 17 vs Bosco
Once again we played against a team trying to win to have a chance to move into 2nd place. So we had to fight hard to get over the top of Bosco who were determined to put in a good performance to give themselves a chance at the CSJBA trophy.
We started off a little slow in the field with Elliot @ pitcher & Archie @ 1st. But 2 good catches from Lachlan & then Dylan followed by a throw by Lachlan from 3rd base to Levi @ 2nd base made the 3 outs. Bosco were kept to 2 runs in the first.
Round 15 vs Comets Gold
The table has closed up behind us. It seems that every second week we are matched against the team currently second & keen to remain there. This week we faced Comets Gold who was primed for a big effort to hold onto 2nd place.
The first couple of innings started off similar to a lot of our recent games, with strong opposition fielding making us really earn the max 6 runs.
Round 14 vs St George
We returned to baseball after the long Christmas break. Sometimes this is a major challenge for the young players. Whilst it wasn’t one of our best efforts we did enough to scrape through with a win.
Luckily Lachlan & Dylan returned with their fielding skills remaining sharp. When given the chance @ pitcher, Lachlan made 3 stops & throws to Dylan who converted all the chances to outs of to restrict St George to 3 runs.
Round 12 vs Giants
Today we had a top of the table clash with the Giants.
If we win today we virtually seal first place in the 9s competition.
We started the game on fire. We restricted the Giants to runs 0 in the first innings with Lachlan making an out from pitcher to Levi @ 1st, followed by an out from Ellectra @ 2nd to Levi. To finish off the innings Lachlan took a good catch. A great start to the game.
However we soon learned that the Giants were not going to give up easily when we were restricted to only 3 runs due to excellent fielding by Giants in the first innings.
Round 11 vs Comets Royal
We returned to Como to take on the 2nd Comets team hoping to continue our strong batting & return to our best fielding form.
We continued our marvellous batting & running ways racking up 6 runs each innings. There were a few hiccups with running along the way plus there were a few outs when our batters hit it straight to the fielders.
Round 10 vs Bosco
We had the whole oval to ourselves & decided to use the main oval for the first time. The parents seemed to enjoy the facilities, but it took the players a few innings to get used to the different diamond.
Bosco started the game on fire with both the bat & glove! They batted extremely well & scored 6 runs in all the first 3 innings. Bosco hit the ball extremely well & hit a heap of balls into the outfield. We did make a number of outs, but just could not make the 3rd out to keep them to less than 6 runs in the 2nd & 3rd innings. We probably did miss a couple of chances to get the 3rd out, but it wasn’t our day.
Another great day for the Tigers U9s juggernaut.
Our fielding again was outstanding! With the Scots restricted to scores of 1, 0, 1 & 6 by brilliant fielding by the Tigers. All our pitchers today: Dylan, Levi, Zak & Ellectra did a wonderful job fielding & making throws to first. I was happy to see good strong throws to 1st base accounting for most of our outs. Also Ellectra made a great throw to home plate to get the runner before he scored.
Round 8 vs Comets Gold
The first game of the 2nd round of matches seen us play against the 3rd placed Comets Gold. I was happy with a comprehensive victory.
Once again the Tigers batting & base running was a very high standard. We again had a number of big outfield hits to keep the runners advancing around the bases. We had a huge scare in the first innings, when the Comets made a great catch & turned the double play to rub out both lead batters. However....
Round 7 vs St George
We travelled to our furthest away game for the season to complete the first round at St
George. We have now played all the teams in the competition & have the return
matches to complete up to the Christmas break. I think the best way to monitor how
much the team has improved over the season is by checking the scores against the
teams the second time around.
No Game Bye weekend
Round 5 vs Giants
We had our first 9am start for a while, so I was worried that the kids might still be half
asleep at game time. However all the kids were wide awake & everyone was thankful
that we were playing early so we would escape the worst heat of the day.
Unfortunately one of our new star recruits, Elliot was unavailable due to illness.
Round 4 vs Comets Royal
Despite missing training due to the severe storm weather our team put up one of our most impressive displays of the season. Our batting has been our strength this season, & we had another strong batting display today. We did have a rare short innings today, but I must say that this was more due to some excellent fielding by the Comets players, rather than our batting.
Round 3 vs Bosco
After the usual 2 week break for school holidays we returned to playing baseball away to
Bosco. This initial break is always a worry for the younger teams; the coach always just
hopes that they remember which way to run to first base.
However the coach didn’t have to worry with this team.
Round 2 vs Arncliffe Scots
Our second game of the season was our first home game for the year. Once again we
had to play with 9 players & we also had to battle on without Coach Lauren.
This season we have set the players the test of playing in the U9s. This involves the challenge of both playing on a bigger diamond & most of the team taking on older players. Our team is primarily made of players that were still eligible to play in the U8s & probably the 2 smallest players in the comp, who happen to be our true age U9s players. We also have 2 players enjoying baseball for their first season.
